Belize City Hotels

Belize city is not your typical north american city - infact it can be quite the shock when you first show up. You will land at the Belize international hotel, walk off the plane onto the tarmac and into a small building to clear customs. It shouldn’t take more then 15 minutes to clear customs and you will find yourself outside wondering what to do. First don’t let anyone carry your bags, it is only a few feet and they will want money for carrying your bags.

You will then be asked by taxi drivers where you want to go, the cost to go to Belize City is about $20-$25USD - you can’t negotiate this price, so just pay the first driver and get on your way. The drive will take you through some rural areas, along the belize river and eventually into the city - the drive will take about 20-30 minutes. Feel free to chat up your taxi driver, he’s probably lived in Belize city all his life and can tell you a good story or to.

Belize city is small, only about 60,000 residents and it seems as if everybody knows everybody, maybe because they are packed so tightly.

Belize city is split on 2 sides by the mouth of the Belize river, basically there is a tourist side and the local side. The tourist side is quite safe with some large very nice hotels and shops. Across the belize river swing bridge is the main city and it is bustling with activity and not that pretty. During the day it is relatively safe but you will be harassed, after dark it is not advised to go outside in the city. There is problems with drugs and gangs in the city and it is bessed to stay inside your hotel.

Don’t let Belize city turn you off though, it is the one dark spot in the country - once outside the city the whole country is safe and very freindly. It is best to arrange your Belize city hotel before you arrive for the reasons stated above.
